I have been working with databases for the last 6 months or so. I am entirely self taught. Starting this fall I have the opportunity to attend school to recieve a more complete education so that I can increase my effectiveness as a DBA. I'm interested in attending school so that I can maximise my understanding and potential in regards to database systems.
My local community college offers Access and excel classes that I plan to start off with. Yesterday I spoke with my advisor and he said that I needed to decide if I wanted to go for a 4 year degree or just a certificate program. So that's my question. In database administration, is there value to pursuing a 4 year degree? How much of a difference will it make?
I like the idea of getting a degree, but at the same time, have very little family support so time and money are both considerations as well. unfortunately I can't afford to attend classes just to attend classes.
I'm not looking for any scientific answers. I realize that decisions dealing with school are dependent on many factors. I'd love to hear whatever advise you would give to one of your kids if they were pondering the 4 year degree.
Thanks for your thoughts.
