I have been asked to build a database to be used in Access 2002. I only have Access 2000 but can 'borrow' a PC with 2002 briefly.

I was planning to build in Access 2000, upgrade in Access 2002 and then secure in Access 2002. Reading some of the threads I presume it would not be advisable to secure in Access 2000 and then upgrade. Am on on the right lines?

Finally, I downloaded the Access security 2000 from Microsoft website but I cannot find a similar document for Access 2002. Any pointers on such a document welcome.

Many thanks...Adam

Adam -

I will just throw my 2 cents in. When you say you are going to secure the database, I am not sure if that means you are going to create your own MDW (workgroup information file) or if you are just going use the standard one (System.mdw) and add Users and object level security. I have not run into issues upgrading the object level security, but you may have trouble with the users if you do not have your own MDW file. If you are creating your own MDW file then you should be able to upgrade it and then attach it to the XP database - and not lose the users, groups or their security. If you have not worked with this stuff much you may be better off just building all in the XP database.

Good Luck!

Thank you for your reply.

By securing I had intended in creating a new workgroup file with users. I have only worked in Access 2000 so far and currently have a database ready to upgrade.

I was going to upgrade to Access 2002 and new create a new workgroup file & secure. I presume the steps to secure are the same for Access 2000 and Access 2002? The only document I can find from Microsoft refers to Access 2000.

Thank you.

Hi,

If you have an workgroup file already created then just link it to the Access 2002 database and as soon as someone logs on Access will automatically upgrade the .mdw file.
