I am devastated by todays Supreme Court decision. I can’t trust the main media in the US. I am not 100% sure I can trust my conservative pundits. May I ask you Brits how good or how bad is socialized medicine.

The problem comes in the form of funding and ridiculous targets. If the people are willing to pay the taxes (and the goverment uses that money properly:banghead then the NHS would be brilliant.
In general the NHS (National Health Service) works fine. The mainstream day to day illnesses and treatments are not a problem. As funding is tight, it is the fringes that see the biggest problems - new or experimental treatments/drugs, low occuring illnesses.

My biggest concern is that my government has never run anything properly. Everything they touch is a disaster. I am pushing seventy and worked hard all my life so that I could retire have a good life and good medical coverage. At times I have worked three jobs. I remember working 14 hours a day, come home shower go eat, sleep and start all over again. Now my government is going to take away some of some my medical coverage to give it to people that have not earned it. One woman on the news said she is so glad now her daughter could have some kind of operation. In the first place no matter what our government said, lots of people are still not going to get the treatment they need. I am sorry her daughter needs medical treatment. I would want her to have the best treatment available, but not at the price of me loosing mine that I have worked a life time for. I don’t know if this woman made some bad decisions in life, but many have. Now my government wants me to pay for their bad decisions. Liberals always talk about fairness. How is that fair that I have worked over 50 years to have good medical coverage, and now they will take part of it away.
May I here from some more Brits. I am not up on Ausies, do they have socialized medicine.

Of course the U.S. already has socialized medicine--medicare and medicaid, which cover some, but not all, of the fringes. From one point of view ObamaCare proposes to reduce the fringes.

I would say that socialised healthcare as most european countries have is the mark of a civilised society. It does not necessarily need to be completely free at the point of delivery BUT IT SHOULD BE THERE.

I know of many people who owe their lives to prompt cancer treatment on the NHS here in the UK. These are people who might not be able to affordexpensive private medical insurance.

I was surprised by your attitude to people's bad decisions, we have all got somethings wrong in our lives surely we are not to be punished for say a share crash?

Sure we want to protect our benefit systems from freeloaders but not the just unfortunate or unable.

Having worked in Human Resources and working with benefits, the cost is outrageous especially depending on the industry you are in. I have been in the heavy construction industry for a several years now and the average monthly insurance bill is about $100,000 for roughly 200 employees, so yearly it is about 1.2 million dollars. Our rates increase double digit percentage points every year. The least expensive renewal we have ever had was 14%. I currently cannot afford my company's health insurance so I am on a state plan for myself and my daughter which is actually better health coverage than my employer's plan.

I think this move is a step in the right direction.

Are you happy with how your government runs the military? Does your neighborhood have a fire department? A police department? Does your neighborhood have schools? Roads?
Now you can add hospitals to that list. What is the problem?

The problem is that I feel my goverment has lied to me. Over 50 years of my life that I have worked hard and now to old to earn and my gioverment takes away part of my medical coverage. I am devistated.

I miss the first part of your message as I am so focus right now on my health. No, Im not happy how the military is run. It was pretty good when I was in but is has fallen. I wouldn't give two hoots about our government school. Why can they stay with the three RRR instead of trying to indoctrinate the children into their liberal views?

Not much has taken affect yet, but it is coming. MY doctor and I will no longer decide what treatment I get, but some bureaucrat will decide if it is financially feasible to treat me, after all I won’t live that much longer according to him anyways. For that matter they will pick my doctor. That’s just the beginning.

I have, up until now, Tri-Care for Life from my 22 years military. It covers almost 100% what Medicare doesn't. It doesn't cost me anything, except a little out of my retirement check. I will no longer have that coverage; I will go into the gene pool with everybody else. That's another thing. When I enlisted at 17 years old, the promise they made to me for coverage had nothing to do with Medicare.

I will have to re-read the HCRA but I don't believe Tri-Care is going away for active or retired military personnel because that would mean Congress would be throwing themselves in the same pool. This was covered in a health care seminar that I attended.
