Strange Split form behavior with Keyboard arrow keys

I have a split form that is setup similar to the form in the Access Events templates. When the form opens up the first feild in the split form has the focus. When I try to use the down arrow key on the keyboard to go down through the records it will only go sideways left to right. I can go throug several records that way and the Up or Down Arrow keys will not work. If, however, I click anywhere in the middle of the records, the down and up arrows will start to work as they should. Why will they not work when I first open up the form? Any ideas?

Try via ENTER button (on the keyboard).
Also, check the "Tab Index" properties in every fields.
