Subreport issues

Hi all,

i have a report with an embedded subreport.

both come from the same table- the main report use a distinct select to get studentid, examid, yearid.

the subreport matches the studentid, examid, yearid with the main report and shows the subject and result values.

therefore in theory by selecting a studentid, examid, yearid for the main report should force the subreport to filter to those values.

it doesn't- no matter what i do- when i run the report it gives me all data from the table rather than just the data set i want.

what i want is this:
main report
studentid= 1343/examid = summer eot/yearid= current ye
subreport
studentid= 1343/examid = summer eot/yearid= current ye

what im getting is this:
main report
studentid= 1343/examid = summer eot/yearid= current ye
subreport
studentid= 1343/examid = summer eot/yearid= current ye
and
studentid= 1343/examid = summer ht/yearid= current ye

notice it's giving me both examids?

ive compared this to other reports and simply cant se why its not working on this report.

the reports need to run off the same tables as i need to define the examid and yearid and have that filter the contents of the subreport.

any ideas as to what is going on?

it's driving me crazy!
