I have read some of the threads and there are people out there who have experienced a similar problem, but I haven't seen an actual solution, or I may have missed it.

I have several subreports on a main report, and some of them view correctly in preview mode, but others overlap. In design view, the subreports are not touching in any way. Each subreport appears to be completely separate from the other. I have also checked the can grow and can shrink options. All to no avail.

This happens only in preview mode. If I open the main report in Print Preview mode, it looks fine. Any thoughts?

I've got excactly the same problem (Access 2007). The only work around I've found is to have the report open in print preview mode, where it reads fine but isn't very user friendly.

I've seen it reported elsewhere but no-one seems to have an answer. Is it a bug? Any help would be appreciated.

Are the subreports overlapping vertically or horizontally?

If vertically, check you do not have any fields to the left or right which can override the can grow property.

Reports are not my strong point but I seem to recall there are properties you can set around grouping of data to appear on one page or the next, so you could also look at these settings

Thanks for the suggestions CJ London. They are overlapping vertically, but there is nothing to either side - the sub-report is basically the same width as the main report.

I am increasingly thinking it's something in Access 2007. I've opened the database in Access 2013 Preview and the report displays as I would expect. Which is annoying as all the users who will use the database are still on 2007. I've not been able to try it yet in the 2010 version.
