Table Linked to an Excel File Issue

XP/Access 2010

I have an Access database with a table linked to an Excel file. When I try to update the linked table to a different Excel file, I get an error message that says "'file 1 $' is not a valid file name." Both the currently linked file and the one I want to update the link to have filenames that end .xls when looking at them in a "My Computer" window. However, the file that is currently successfully linked shows the filename ending ".xls\'file 1 $' in the Linked Table Manager window. Any ideas what's going on here?

Is there a password on this file that locks it? The 'file 1 $' part looks like the real file name because the .xls looks like part of the file path. Otherwise I've got no clue.
