UK Post Codes and Distances

Just been asked to work out a way of matching two UK addresses by using distances based upon UK postcodes - "show me all Customers within X miles of this postcode" type thing.

I know there is some Commercial Software around (that's where they got the idea from) but is the raw data available?

I expect I'd only want info down to the first part of the code, but even then each one must have to be given geographic co-ordinates and then some form of matching done based on the shortest distances.

Any ideas? Even is possible to "link" to a commercial product (name suggestions please)
