I all,

I have a database with all uk address's on it as layed out below which is great for queries etc..

There are 1754968 records on here in total covering the whole of the UK and Ireland from around 2007

I can supply this on CD for a small charge if anybody would find this useful

Plenty of people would find it useful im sure but selling isnt really the thing here. Everyone helps and advises for free and takers collect good advise for free too.

Also,

can you actually sell the data as its usually only provided by the Post office who do not allow re-sale.

I don’t need it at the moment thank you, however I would be interested in establishing contact with you as I may well need something like this in the future.

i am sure this info is copyright Post Office, and you can't sell it.

The Post Office has copywritten my address?!

Wouldn't it depend more on how he got the data? If he bought it from the PO then fair enough, he likely cannot legally sell copies of it.

However if he didn't then it's just a table of addresses, no different from a phonebook (except for the lack of a phone number...).

Personally, assuming it is legally distributable, I could see a small charge to cover CD, time & postage being fair.

the post office copyrights the (THEIR!) post code information

which is why you cant search google maps on UK post codes at post code level, to retrieve lats/longs etc

eg google maps won't zoom to (say) NN4 2BZ, it stops at either NN4, or NN4 2 -which is possibly not accurate enough for most purposes.

I am sure anyone who does do this - eg multimap, are paying the Post Office for the privilege.

unlike US zip codes, which ARE public property.

If I type my postcode into google maps it takes me to my street, not the central point for my area.

Try it with my work address, compare the results for SS1 (a whole town) and SS1 2LB (a specific street corner, exactly where the building is).

I'm not sure then - I tried this a while ago and I am not sure of the details

you can register with google, to scrape lats/longs etc from UK post code searches - but it won't give you precision down to the detail post code
