Unactivated Office Breaks Ribbon

Does anyone know why an unvalidated Office installation would not invalidate the ribbon? I'm working on getting Office validated, so this issue will get fixed, but I'm curious why I'm having a bunch of bugs in the ribbon only when Office is not validated. It seems like the invalidate command is not working. The ribbon is there and functions, but often shows the wrong controls for the form that is active, and the enabled buttons are wrong.
