Being relatively new to this forum.... Ok, REALLY new to this forum, i have a certain apprehension about spouting random rants and what-not.
Considering we're standing around yappin at the watercooler (which needs to be filled BTW) I was interested to learn of your Access debacles, management and/or customer gripes. Here's Mine:
Background - I've spent a long time as a number cruncher but am entirely new to the wonderful world of Access. I did receive an impropmtu training from a programmer that was tremendously knowledgable. Now here I am six months later with at least a little pride in how far I've managed not to fall since deemed competant to stumble around Access on my lonesome. lol
Problem - At the outset of my endeavor a reporting solution was needed for accurate accounting of two third party databases. Well, one third party database from two isolated networks. At the time this project was thrust upon me there was a very crude (Even to my eyes) Access project that was mostly held together with Query-ish band-aids and VBA duct tape. I decided that it would be far simpler to design a new reporting solution than to apply even more band-aids. I inquired the powers that be as to the desired scope (Including appearances, form flow, etc) of of the finished solution and was told, "We really don't care what it looks or feels like. Just as long as it works."
Where It Started Getting Scary - Some bright person in management decided the project should be turned into a stand alone Asset Management solution for an entire warehouse. I was asked to document the entire project in detail and include a comprehensive help file. I thought sure, no problem. I'm new but I'm not scared. How bad can it be?
Outcome - Needless to say I've had to overcome some Monstrous obstacles and have almost completed something that I consider a devine miracle. Yet somehow, someway regardless of my Herculean efforts and notable program stability. It's been in use for the last month and a half all I have left is a couple typos, etc. I get the email today (And I could just see Bill Lumbergh's face), "Um, yeah. About your Program. I don't think that's the right font or color we're looking for."
O.k. I'm not saying going back and changing the font and color on every form and report is a real big problem. It's the principle of the matter. lol
It could be worse I guess if all I get complaints about is the appearance....
