How many people here actually get to do what they love to do (at least 90% of the time)?

Which one Bob? :)

I work in electronic manufacturing distribution.
I'm also a flight instructor and airport manager.

I enjoy my job. I enjoy the Access/SQL Server development, which is probably 75% of what I do. I'm actually IT Manager (staff of 3: me, myself and I) for a transportation company with operations in 2 cities. I'm responsible for everything: servers, PC's, network, applications, etc. That means I get a lot of variety in my day. I'm sort of a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none, so I'm always learning something new.

I spent my whole working life in IT
started as trainee programmer in 62, was retired ealy in 92 when company retired everybody. almost, over 50, I had been Tech manager for over 20 years by then, IBM main frames and had enjoyed it most of the time.

Then did 13 years part time , its a long story, as jack of all trades for a charity, mainly Microsoft products, enjoyed that too, very satisfying educating people scared of computers.

I feel that I have been lucky.

Most of the time I enjoy what I do. The only thing is that it brings me a lot of stress and I am not good at dealing with it. So when there is trouble ahead, my girlfriend gets to deal with a grumpy man. But she is very nice and knows how to calm me down.

For those who don't know yet, I have an IT company who deals with all kinds of projects (Hardware, databases, softwares, web site, ... ). I have to find customers, do analysis, find the staff to make the project or do it myself, install it, teach users how to use it, run after customer to get paid and do every thing else that a business is about (pay taxes, deal with staff, run the office, ...).

I'd love it if I could find a job that dealt primarily with Access development/maintenance. I have seen several of those jobs (permanent - amazingly enough) but unfortunately they are mostly either in Minnesota or on the East Coast and both my wife and I don't want to move there.

Right now I'm in a job that I do not like and I want out, the sooner the better.

My first university degree is in geography (1974), my second is in computer science (1992 - so my programming skills are ancient). I am being paid to use a computer program to analyze topographic maps! It only took me 30 years to get here, but yes I love this job: it's the reason why I haven't retired yet, even though I am eligible.

Gee Bob, can you tell me where you see these Access jobs in Minnesota ?

Thanks,
RichM

Sorry to hear that Bob. I can empathize. Not real thrilled with my situation either. I miss New Zealand more each day I'm in the USA.

Bob - don't get on a downer - could be worse you could be dead , now thats boring tried once - didn't like it came back

how to deal with stress, I personally sing (out of tune, out of time and half the words are wrong) on the way to and from work -been caught a couple of times by people at work who know me and are used to me singing - Hey who cares and the people who work with me I have managed to get them to sing along (none of us can hold a tune and we normally end up singing different versions of different song )

My favorite to annoy people is 2 little boys by Rolf Harris - drives 'em mad

decent song - but not when its done my way .:D

I haven't even looked in over a year because I didn't want to even see them, since it just made me depressed to see a job I might actually like, but can't go for it. But I got contacted by several recruiters asking if I would be interested in positions and they were located in Minnesota.

i really LOVE my job...

gee bob... sorry you dont like your job... look at the bright side - if you hate your job at least a change would be a move up... right??? unless you are asking if they want fries with their burger!!!

Who actually LOVES their job?

I don't love my job, I love my wife ;)
I'm working as a QA group leader in an Oil company and in that capacity I'll have to travel much thru Europe in doing evaluations at manufacturing plants/organizations. I like this work, but what I mostly appreciate is the act of freedom in this job, i.e. I can make my own decisions on many items and I'm not bound to a (grumpy) manager or so.

That sounds very good.

I would not be in the watercooler if I 100% loved my job. Unless of course I loved the fact that I had free time to engage in such activities. Which really I don't but instead use it as an opportunity to give my brain a rest. (Which will explain some of my posts)

There are some days I love my job and there are other days I wish I could stay home with my kids. I tend to waffle back and forth. But I'm pretty fortunate where I am. I have an interesting variety of work to perform, I work for the gov't so fairly decent benefits, and my boss is on another floor so I only see him about once a week. :D Really though, everyone in my section gets to work fairly autonomously and when we have inclement weather or something like that I have the ability to put in some hours from home via a VPN connection. Not too shabby.

With the way things are going right now though, there have been a lot of grumblings and rumors about outsourcing, etc. If that happens it happens but until then I guess I'll roll with the punches as long as I have a job...
