why do the bound ID change?

This is a really strange error:

I have a form with a table as a recordsource, and a number of listboxes and comboboxes having source columns set to various fields from the recordsource. When selecting an item in one of the cbo:s the bound column value is not saved to the table with the id it has for example "RTRETT", it is saved with a number. I have understood that the number is the same as the items order in the list, but I have ot defined that number as an item, why isn't the real value saved to the table?

Is the combobox bound to the form recordsource?

Which field of the combobox is the bound field?

Are you sure the number is not the PK of the record, that's what you should be storing if it's coming from a lookup table
