Word 2007 sees Word 2003 as read only

I have some form letters that were created in Word 2003. These form letters are now being opened by Word 2007. Everything works OK until I need to edit and then save the Word 2003 form letters. Word 2007 won't allow me to save the changes. Word 2007 sees the Word 2003 documents as read only and the read only attribute is cleared. Is there a way to make Word 2007 save changes to an edited Word 2003 document?Any suggestions will be appreciatted.
