SUCCESS.
got the field to validate as m M f or F and to auto upshift.

Next (related, but new) question.
If I start to add a record and abort in the middle, how do I get the system to delete that partially completed record without insisting that the field I'm working on at the time is "right" (e.g., if I am in the middle of adding M or F and want to abort, is there a way to abort before/without completing the M/F?)

Your follow-up question is on a different topic than this thread, so you should start a new thread in the appropriate forum (I'd say Forms). It helps people searching later if threads are kept to a single topic.

Hi noodle and welcome to AWF

You've also cross posted this here https://www.access-programmers.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=238461
Doing that wastes everyone's time as we & you may not see answers in the other thread.
If you're not sure which forum to use, put a link like that above in both posts

As yours is a new question it would be better as a new thread.
Please do so, then delete both posts.
After you do that I'll delete mine & put an edited version in the new thread! (just the bit below)

I've skimmed your code - as you said its certainly long...
It would help if you explained its overall purpose

As a starting point see this post to simplify steps 2 & 3
