So excellent!
On the third picture: the light yellow Dodge Pioneer looks just like the one our neighbour had... but theirs was much bigger of course...

We had similar to that, actually there are some places which still exist which are off the beaten path that you can still have the old school diner experience. Legitimate diners not someone revamping or remodelling to just be touristy or trendy.
Actually a good documentary they reran on PBS recently is Billy Connolly Route 66, you can see a lot of the slightly off route originals.
If you search it on YouTube there is parts of it put online http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4SdAVr3uYk

Very interesting! I have driven parts of 66 but not all of it. I have been in all of the states that it covers, however I have done something similar. Mostly I have to get quickly from one meeting to the other, and travel in the RV, but one time I had a lone meeting and took the pick-up and my wife ask if we could just cruise thru small back roads instead of intestate’s. A 6 hour trip took us 4 or 5 days, but we had a good time. Neighbors of mine in MA had just got married later in life and both were loaded. For their honeymooned they drove from MA to Key West, FL, and then back by a different route. They drove until they got tired or something caught their interest. Stayed in that spot an hour or a week, whatever struck there fancy? It took them 6 months. That’s some honeymoon.

The best trips are ones where the journey is the highlight. We used to take 12 days between assignments and explore more based on compass heading then actually having someplace to go. Rarely taking the major highways and always meeting good people.
If you like reading, Neil Peart (drummer and biker) has authored some excellent books on some of the epic rides he has taken. Also a good movie to catch is "One Week", you can find that on NetFlix.

If I get a chance I will get that book Do you know if it is available for computer?
Once for my two weeks vaction I took a young boy from my church with no father on a motorcycle trip. I had a little 250 cc one lunger. I had welded a aluminum milk crate type box on the carrier and we put a little clothing in it and headed from Woonsocket, RI to Coopers Town baseball museum. The best part was stopping at all kind of interesting things that we found along the way. The funny part was he said he didn't need to stop and rest. I forgot how many miles we had gone but he beg me to stop. When he got off he could not stand and fell down.

So how old were you when you went off with this young boy for two weeks?

And why did the church not have a father? Was it Roman Catholic and he had to resign?

Punctuation can make all the difference in the meaning of a sentence.
@Col--sometimes you just make me laugh out loud.

I know a couple of his books are on Amazon in Kindle format. The book titled Ghost Rider is very inspirational.
I am sure that road trip with the young man has made a huge change in his life, it is great when people do good for others in the community, especially youth and elders.

Dick, any chance of an answer to my earlier question?

Also, how do you "take" a young boy away for two weeks?, where did he live before you went off with him? Did nobody miss him?

If this is your earlier question, why is it of interest to you how old I was? If the question is about my grammar, then I don't have time to play that silly game.

A bit tetchy aren't we? Nothing to do with your grammar, (although that is suspect) I was just wondering if it is normal for someone at least old enough to drive, to "take" a young boy away for a two week jolly.

Not touchy at all, in fact I think your posts are funny, and I try to answer them in a funny way. Evidently we have a different sense of humor. Secondly I have said this before, there is nothing you or anybody else that can say that will upset me. Why would it, nothing you can say will change who I am, the good part and the faults? I am not sure your second part is a joke or not, so I will answer it as serious even though I have my doubts. Yes, and yes it is absolutely yes, normal, to take disadvantage kids for experiences that they may never be able to have. The kid talked about going to the Base Ball hall of fame for years. I can't understand why you would even questions it unless you never do anything altruistic in your life. Here is a similar experience. My Navy buddy when he got out of the Navy went to work for my Dad managing dad’s go-kart track. There was a 13 year old boy that would do odd jobs at the track for free rides. He came from a family and neighbor that were terrible. His older brother was already been in trouble many times with the law, his father was a drunk. My buddy and I took the kid with us when we went from RI to NY to his parent’s house and to go to the world’s fair. He made friends with my buddy’s 13 year old brother. He experienced a better way of life. 35 years late he found my email somewhere, and told me how that changed his life. He joined the military, went to college, and had a good job, a wife and kid and a house. Is it normal, well for some of us?

So you nor anyone else thinks its a bit strange for a grown man to "take" a young boy and disappear for two weeks with him.

Ok, that's interesting.

I'll say no more. Odd that the church hasn't a father though, who is there to guide the flock?

Col

Col, now I know your joking. Have you never heard of the Big Brother Association?
