Hi All,

I have a table with starts with an autonumber as a primary key.
Recently it has been giving out crazy high and sometimes negative numbers when a new record is created

Dose any know what might cause this?

p.s. I've tried compacting and repairing the DB

i don't know the cause of the problem but as a quick fix maybe a Make-Table query will get you going (put your bad table in the query grid, select your columns and create a new table from that) or importing your problem-table into a new db?

This needs to be stated over and over again, but an AUTONUMBER is ONLY, I repeat ONLY good for getting a UNIQUE number. It is NOT guaranteed to give you consecutive, nor even all positive, numbers. It really should only be used behind the scenes as an ID field to identify a record.

If used in a replicated database the autonumber will start using negative numbers as well as positives. There may be other situations where this will occur also. Also, there are times where an autonumber may, even if it is set to increment, jump several numbers (including several hundred at a time).

So, if you must have something that doesn't act this way, don't use an autonumber, but instead create your own process to generate a number for you.
