Is the Big Bang theory corrrect?

Or

1) Is it a case of the Catholic church funding for a result they wanted?

Or

2) ?????????????

Are Hawking and Co talking the truth or are they satisfying the church.

Do you think the Big Bang theory is correct?

Is the Big Bang theory corrrect?
Probably not in every detail. We just don't know enough yet.

What evidence do you have for this allegation. Surely the Catholic Church has nothing to gain from th Big Bang theory

I am sure Hawkings and Co are being completely honest. No evidence to suggest otherwise.

My counter question would be, What was there before the Big Bang?

Apart from Hawking and Co going to see the Pope.......It gives it a start. Goes hand in hand.

At about the time I was at a Catholic school (I am now 61) was the point where the Catholic church moved to.......God breathed a soul into the monkey and hence man. In other words, for at least the last 50 years the Catholic church has put foward the general view of..God kick started things and then sat back.

Big Bang is generally supported by churches and for the simple reason it gives a start time.

Given what happens in different areas of scientific study it is reasonable to question whether Big Bang was funded. For example, I have been deeply interested in dinosaurs all of my life....

I am sure Hawkings and Co are being completely honest. No evidence to suggest otherwise.

I am not too sure.

Big Bang is the gift to the religious.

That is your question. Start a thread based on your question.

I am soliciting opinions as to whether Big Bang took place. With only a couple of postings I don't think we have yet arrived at the stage of pre Big Bang:D

Now there are variants of the Big Bang theory which suggest that the univers doesnot expand for ever but oscillates between its maximum size and th small volume which causes the big bang. So this may have happened many times - we just don't know. Any evidence has been destroyed by the big bang.

perfect answer

It's not as though the proponents of the Big Bang theory have hidden their workings out and just published their conclusions - I don't think it's plausible that it could be a conpiracy.

But does anyone agree with Big Bang. Rabbie is into Big Bounce and that is the only opinion, unless you count Rich agreeing with Big Bounce.

Although scott-atkinson's question on pre Big Bang would suggest he agrees with Big Bang.

Do you agree with Big Bang?

The pictures taken by the Hubble telescope that were reported to be the big bang were certainly impressive! Whether they are true or not, whether there is a god or are lots of gods or not, I do believe this and many more rocks were formed in that particular way. The big bang theory does not allege that life was created during the split, but that events that followed facilitated life.

Who knows, maybe we are just part of some kids science experiment!

I actually said that it was impossible to know what happened before the big bang because any evidence could have been destroyed in the big bang. The big bounce theory could be an explanation but as we do not yet know the total mass in the universe (dark matter is extremely difficult to measure) there is no easy answer to this question.

Now with two threads going in parallel on this topic with cross quoting between them this discussion is going to be even more difficult.

Well, this one is specific to Big Bang.

As I said in the other thread, I think it's a strong contender and seems to be supported by some evidence, but I have no particular emotional or intellectual investment in whether or not it turns out to be correct (if we can ever know that).

In our Creation Story there was a woman that came from another world. And at one time, that world came close to this planet. And that woman came here during that time. She is our great, great Grandmother for humans. She had different names. One was Ajinjagaayonh, which means A Matured Flower. Sometimes we call her Sky-woman.
When Sky-woman came here, this planet had no land; it was a planet of water. And she was aided by the birds to get here safely. And a turtle came up and they put the woman on that turtle’s back. And She brought things from that other world when she came here: strawberries, and raspberries, and peaches. So when she was on the turtle, the animals went after the dirt that’s under the water. And they all died except one, but they brought that dirt up, and they put it on the turtle. And Sky Woman walked counter-clockwise around that turtle’s back, and that’s what made the miracle of birth happen. That’s what made seeds turn into humans, and what made a little tiny corn get to be a tall corn stock. And as she went around counter-clockwise, she chanted songs that came from that other world. Some people say that’s where our feather dance came from; that’s what she was doing. And as she went further, that miracle of birth was multiplied. And the turtle turned into the Earth, this continent, and the ground multiplied, and grew.

i think the contraction of the universe is known as 'the big crunch'.
really.

You really must introduce me to your dealer... :D

I can't see how religion would have any benefit by embracing and condoning the Big Bang theory..

By their concept if God caused the Big Bang and Man was created in God's image then we are alone in the Universe unless all creatures on other worlds and galaxies are just like Man, and the chances of that I feel are remote.
