I cannot delete any records in 2003 Access using the delete function. I highlight the record, click on (x) delete, and get the following message: "do you want to delete this record?" And I answer "yes."

When I close out, and re-enter the "Student Demographic Form," within the database, the record and student name is still there.

Also, I can add new students into my Data Input Form, but certain input fields are not functioning. Example: Name, student number, address, state, zip, are all functioning, but when I get to the next line named "school," which has a drop-down arrow listing 7 teacher's names, does not work.

In the past, before I "split" the database using the Split Wizard, it was working fine. Now, when I click on the "drop-down" arrow and select a teacher (which is suppose to pop-in), nothing happens. A teacher is suppose to be assigned to each student.

In design view, I noticed that the box that is not assigning a teacher's name is COMBO 142.

In conclusion: I am unable to delete a record, and I am unable to add a complete record. Without a complete record, the data is useless.

Additional information: I updated Office 2003 to its latest Service Pack, and I updated the Jet 4.0 engine to SP8.

Thanks in advance for any help or advise.

jcraw42 here: I posted the original post. In answer to your question 1) I am not sure about the relationship. It is a form in Student Demographic Listing, and yes it is linked to other forms and records.

But I am talking about: "student name, address, city, state, zip, ID#, race, age, grade, and teacher." In design view, it is Combo32.

If I input "Billy" and realize it was a mistake-so I stop. All I did was input a student name and nothing else. It becomes a part of the database records. But why can I not be able to delete "Billy?"

What is the point of a delete button (function) in Access, if it does not work?

In response to your answer in 2) I went to the link and see no relationship to deleting a simple one line item.

But thanks for your help and response.

It is possible to delete records. If you have Referential Integrity turned on, then Access is protecting your data from getting orphaned.

I would urge you to turn on all the warning so that you can see what you have not handled correctly to allow the delete to work.

Thanks, Dr. problem Solver. One question through! How do you-or what are the steps-to turn off, what you refer to as, "Referential Integrity?"

And, how do I go about see what is turned on, as you suggested?

And, I just read that you could create a "Delete Query" to delete records. Know anything about "Delete Queries? If so, how do I set one up in Access 2003? Feel free to direct me to a nice "white paper" on this (these) issues.

Again, thanks a mill.:o

I have tried to turn off the Referential Integrity in my Access 2003 database, but to no avail. I printed out instructions from an Access 2003 MS paper, but I cannot follow it.

It starts by directing me to the "toolbar," and having me click on "Relationships" button. Once the window is open they inform me to click the "Show Table" button. I have gotten to this point with no problems. Next, they inform me to close the "Show Table" dialog box in order to view the "Relationships" window.

I have one dialog box that shows 17 tables. When I click or double click on a table, another dialog box opens up with the Input Headings for that table.

But the instructions say: "Click Category ID in the first table, and drag it on top of "Category ID" in the second table.

Well, I do not have Category IDs. I have Student IDs. But this is not going to turn off Referential Integrity. Could someone help me turn off this Referential Integrity thing-please?

Thanks in advance.

Are you trying to delete the record from a form? If so does the form properties have "Allow Deletions" set to Yes.

Yes, I am trying to delete a record from a form.

I am in the DRP Student Data: Form, and I am not sure if I am following you. With the DRP input form open in design view (Combo 142), I can click on the "File" and then click on Database properties, but there is no "Allow Deletions" visible.

I can right-click on the student's name and get a combo Box: Combo142, there is nothing indicating a "Allow Deletions."

Get the form up in Design View. Double click in the little square at the very top LHS side of form - this will drop down the form properties box. Click on the "Data" tab and you will see the "Allow Deletions" ppty. It should be set to Yes. You might need to set the "Allow Edits" to yes as well. There are Form ppties as well as Control ppties for a Form.

Right after I made the last post, I went to the help menu and found out how to access the "form selector," and looked in the properties, and "Allow Deletions" and "Allow Edits" both had yes next to them - but I am still unable to delete. So, that was never the probllem.

I am going to try to re-set the "Referential Integrity" function.

If that fails, my next step is to create a "delete query."

Thanks for your assistence.
