You can smoke in restaurants, regardless of what the law says.

Not all states in the US prohibit smoking in restaurants. Mine does, but South Carolina I know doesn't. I was shocked when they asked me smoking or non when I stopped at a Ruby Tuesday there a year back.

Why were you shocked? It seems a perfectly polite question.

Perhaps you were shocked because the questioner thought you smoked? I'm guessing you don't.

Oh, and don't go to Spain. They smoke everywhere, even in shops and no smoking areas, it's such a refreshing change from the UK dictatorial laws. I wanted a smoking room in a hotel in Spain and they didn't have one so a few minutes after I went to the room a porter brought me an ashtray.
