What would you name as the one character flaw that is most dangerous.

For me the worst is the inability of a person to doubt their own judgement.

Sometimes called Narcissism it is exemplified by those who become so enthralled with their own thought processes they are impervious to all countenance. Men like Tony Blair and here in Australia we are now enduring it from our Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

It is born of popularity and nurtured by ineffective opposition.

I have worked with people like this. It is tragic when combined with profound incompetence particulary when there types agglomerate because their position become unassaliable.

I have argued against them and laid out a detailed rebuttal against every point yet still they prevail. I finally realised the situation was hopeless and resigned from my job after one of their numbers replied to my offer to explain the facts I had documented.

"I'm not interested in facts. I've made up my mind."

Seriously, he actually used these words.

I think, by far, the most damaging character flaw is pride. It seeps in and destroys relationships of all kinds, because people are unwilling to admit wrong, or give in, or let things roll of their shoulders because of it.... There are so many instances in my own life that I have recently become aware of as I have focused more on this flaw of mine, where pride has been at the heart of whatever it was that was going on. So many things boil down to pride.

That said, I am very sorry about the job situation. And yes, I can believe that the guy said that to you. Nothing suprises me in the corporate world anymore. People don't want facts, I have often thought that the corporate world is a lot like High School, people gossip, and are petty (Me not discluded, its easy to fall into).

I'm not sure about dangerous but what I find greatly frustrating in others is a lack of empathy.

People can bicker for years on end because they won't stop to consider the reasons why the other person is in conflict with them.

What I hate is people's intolerance to other people's character flaws

I'd go with lack of self-esteem. Often times people who lack it end up being pushed around by someone to do things they normally wouldn't do. They're so desperate to be accepted, or be liked, or have things they don't have, that they bend their principles. That's quite dangerous.

How about a person's inability to not let small things rest? Complex wars have been started over such. Some people just can't seem to agree to disagree and move on. It invariably turns into insults and gun shots.

I think that probably goes back to pride..... I know in cases where I haven't been able to, that that is the case.

I'm not. That was my previous job and it prompted me to change to a much better position in a place where I am respected.:)

I agree. I've publically stated I've moved on - yet there's a person here who wants to rekindle the feud.

Which is fine by me - just don't say it was my fault.

:o

Pride can be as much of an asset though. At the end of last year I was diagnosed with a form of ME and the doctors basically told me to look forward to a lifetime of pain. I seen what it had done to other people and my pride would not let me visualise myself as a victim / disabled person. Yesterday I spoke with my Neurologist who believes that this attitude may well see me making a full recovery, their vision for me just before Christmas was that I would probably have to stop working within a few months. Pride can be an asset :D

For me, the worst character flaw is a common one these days, bad manners. I agree with Galaxio, people are too involved with themselves at the expens of others, it is apparent everywhere, from school children to drivers and even the elderly, nobody has manners because they are too wrapped up in their own world to see other humans as sentient beings.

What's that got to do with my comment? It makes me wonder if you've really moved on that you have to bring it up in this thread.

I agree with you, there is good pride and bad pride.... I suppose the kind I mean, is the kind where a person can't admit wrongness, or is willing to sacrifice peace for the sake of a petty "I told you so" kind of thing, that really doesn't matter much in the grand scheme of the relationship.

Edit: I suppose that I would characterize you as being more gumptious, and persevering then prideful. Which are both excellent characteristics. :) (But of course, I don't mean to TELL you what you are, you know yourself and your characteristics and what they should be called better than I do.)

Drat Krystal, if I had to try and live to these standards I'd probably have to have a sex change! I always pride myself in the fact that, even when I lose my marbles, I will always remember every small detail and cutting "he" ever made in the heat of an argument! Man, I even handfasted the man so I could carry on in future lives :D

Ha!!! .... Well, at least you admit it..... :p I too fail miserably, you know, because I am ALWAYS right. It's hard to let others believe they are, when I know I AM!

I'm not always right Krystal, but I'm never wrong ;)

What's handfasting? Sounds like a technique I might like to tell my wife about... but friction could be an issue

It's an ancient ritual form of marriage, except the belief is that when you "tie the knot" on May day, you are sealing your fate together for all of eternity. He has no escape!!

Aaaah that's sweet... we already did that :) (puke)

Why, because I love her madly of course! Poor thing.... still, at least I'm off the market now, everyone is out of danger for the time being
