Thanks. this seems to have worked but i am slightly confused with the options for what label to use. i am from the UK and want the standard 5 line label to print on A4 sheets of paper do you no which option i should choose?

I tried both of the counts including (*) exactly as it was written then i tried counting the name of my field that's on the report. =Count([First Name]) but i know i am missing something just not sure what, sorry if i seem i am being stupid but i have never used these formulas before.

I have tried this in the footer but i keep getting #Error returned instead of a total.

One last quick thing if that's ok. is it possible to get a total count at the bottom of the report?
