Hmmm. Have you tried to repair the db? Might be worth a shot. If that hasn't resolved it, you could try posting it on here so that we can have a look. Most of us use Access 97, so if it's 2k or higher, can you convert it down?

Is it possible that hey are being hidden? If you to the Format Menu, then choose Bring to Front, see if that does anything. I don't understand why there is a difference if you change them to horizontal, if they did once appear ok as vertical. Sorry, can't think of anything else.

So are you using a combo as Pat suggested? If so check the properties of the combo. As Pat said you need the bound column to be the ID. In Properties, there should be one called Column Count, and this should say 2 (as you need both ID and Name), and your bound column will probably be column 1...

Ok, on page setup from the file menu, go to the columns tab. Under grid settings it will say, number of columns. Change this from 1 to 2. Then you can choose the column layout across then down. HTH.
