    technical discussion area

Hi, I think it would be worth having a pure technical discussion area. It's clear from a recent discussion between myself and Scottgem that people have different views/opinions on the best way to implement aspects of relational database theory, system analysis, object modelling etc . I'm always...

Is English language Britan's greatest gift

I believe the inspiration came from the agricultural revolution because it was the first large scale use of mechanisation to improve productivity. Industry saw what agriculture had achieved and looked for ways to do the same. The steam engine was the means to the end or the driving force for...

    quick question regarding 0

No i didn't. I made no assumptions about Cereldine's work other than that she had to enter data into a table. How that was to happen now or later was bye-the-bye. I also took the view that table level control of duplication is the most efficient, transferable, simplest and robust method to...

    quick question regarding 0

Sorry could you be a bit more patronizing please  I often use autonumbers as unique identifiers i was trying to convey the fact that natural keys should not be dismissed and that there is a techincal issue with regards to how access implements keys. It is simply not enough to assign...

    quick question regarding 0

You made no mention of indexes to Cereldine. I've seen numerous db's with autonumbers set as a PK and no indicies and consequently either a load of code to try and prevent multiple entries or a mess. You cannot assume that everyone understands this to the same degree as you. TS

    quick question regarding 0

Ok ok it's a not perfect example  :D but that's not the point. Where a natural PK exists it should be used. If you always use an Autonumber then there is nothing to prevent duplicate data being entered. If Cereldine sets an Autonumber to PK then she needs to restrict the sickness codes...

    quick question regarding 0

I'd add a word of caution. Autonumbers are not strictly speaking PK's. In the sense that if you have this; TBL_ADDRESS HOUSENUMBER LINE1 LINE2 LINE3 POSTCODE In the UK at least HOUSENUMBER and POSTCODE are the natural PK's If you set an Autonumber to PK in the tables design view then a user...

Is English language Britan's greatest gift

The industrial revolution in Britain was inspired in part by the Agricultural revolution of the 17th C. The major driving force of the industrial revolution was the desire to process the vast amount of mineral and agricultural wealth -both native and foreign - by the most efficient means...

    SQL Select statement problem

This link shows you how to bind a form to the recordset http://support.microsoft.com/kb/281998 or you could return the data from the recordset to the form. Me.TXTBOXCustomerID = Rst.Fields.Item(0) '0 is the first field returned in the recordset Me.TXTBOXCustomerFirstName = Rst.Fields.Item(1)...

    If Then Else

Hi, I've replicated your problem with bound comboboxes. You need to reference the field to which the combo box is bound. Once a selection is made the data is stored in the field. No selection = no data which means a msg to the user. HTH. If IsNull(Me.MYFIELDNAME) = True Then StrErrMsg =...

    If Then Else

Ok here is a db with essentially the same code - different underlying table. See if that works for you and see if there is anything different. I've saved it as a 97 so it should work for most versions. I'd double check that you have all the names of the controls referenced correctly in the code...

    VB Code stuck in Loop

No worries. :) In general it is best not to use Goto statements unless error trapping as it can turn code into spaghetti. Your UserID <> "g.spicer" is a logic test. The fact that it may not be g.spicer isn't actually an error and therefore it's better dealt with by a logical test such as an if...

    VB Code stuck in Loop

Your missing an End if after the If which is causing an error which is being trapped. It's best to comment out any error trapping whilst testing code to see what the error are first. Hope this helps. TS Try: Private Sub confnotes_Click() On Error GoTo Err_confnotes_Click Dim UserID As...
