As far as I am aware you need to at least have a copy of CR Runtime to run the reports. It would be helpful if you could tell us what front end application you are using to run the reports.

You can write a macro and attach it to the field. On entry - unlock, on exit - lock. Hope this helps

Have you tried making the txt box a parameter field? That way you can suppress the parameter if the event dates are null.
