    Minimum and Grouping

sorry to resurrect this, but i have an additional question. if we sort the data above by Scode then by Status and then use the First command to select the necessary date, it doesn't work. but why? l

    Plus sign before a formula

i occasionally use + instead of = when i type in simple numeric formulas (e.g. +123/12) because + can be found in the number pad section of the keyboard, whereas the = sign is in a different section. minor convenience.. US keyboard. l

    Hopefully a simple problem

what exact formula are you using? i agree that lookup with 'false' should do it. something like - =VLOOKUP(VALUE,RANGE,COLUMN#,FALSE) l

"Top 2 per Category" Query Mind-Bogglingly Slow

Namliam, i tried your 3-stage suggestion, and it worked, thanks. one question - do i have to run those 3 queries separately, or there is a way to combine them so i can run the whole thing in one shot? ByteMyzer, i tried your indexing suggestion, but for now am getting big fat blank for the...

"Top 2 per Category" Query Mind-Bogglingly Slow

i am purely an end-user of this database, all i see is an Access local version on my machine. so, i am not sure what type it is - SQL, Access, etc. i am more of an Excel user, i just use Access to pull data which usually end up in Excel. i'll ask the Information dept.. 1 - if 'linked table'...

"Top 2 per Category" Query Mind-Bogglingly Slow

Namliam, completely forgot to thank you, sorry! well, thank you. top 2, part 2: left for a day, came back in the morning - still running. at about noon, it finished. 23 hours to output about 6500 rows! and then i still had to use Excel to arrange the output.. i could have copy-pasted...

"Top 2 per Category" Query Mind-Bogglingly Slow

i am running a query to produce top 2 dates in each "prop id" category (see SQL below). the progress bar hasn't moved even a fraction of a millimeter while i was out to lunch. is it normal? how slow can it go?! the dbase is only about 47000 records strong. l SELECT S.[prop id], S.date FROM...

    Average non-contiguous cells, ignoring zeros

ok, i think there is a problem - when you show blanks instead of zeros (through Excel Options), the ZEROS ARE STILL THERE, they are just hidden. like their font is white. my apologies. i projected this feature from pivot tables, i guess, where it works just fine.. this is for Excel 2007, btw...

    Average non-contiguous cells, ignoring zeros

another possibility - in the excel options there is a check to show zeros as zeros. if you uncheck it, there will be blanks instead. which will solve your problem - but at the expense of those zeros.. l

Pivot Table Report Filter - NOT Displaying Items with No Data

sure.. filter by category, i.e. select one in cell G2 (for example 'large'). now if you want to filter by sub-category, in cell G3, you still see all the possible sub-categories. i'd like to see only two - 'big' and 'huge'. this is a very simplified example, in reality i am doing this with...

Pivot Table Report Filter - NOT Displaying Items with No Data

thanks. i probably didn't explain myself clearly, but i actually want the opposite, sort of. let me give an example - in excel 2007 - i have 'category' and 'sub-category' variables which i use as my filter (big filter, above the table with all the data). i select 'small' in my category filter...

Need a second grand total column in pivot table

in excel 2007 - - bring your variable to the 'values' section of the 'pivot table field list' one more time (sum of QT2?); - go into this variable and choose 'show value as' as '% of total', instead of 'normal'; - hide the columns that show the percentages for 2007 and 2008; - hope that this...

Pivot Table Report Filter - NOT Displaying Items with No Data

is it possible? i have a few variables in my pivot table report filter. i'd like to narrow down the report by using one (or more) of the variables. can i make the other variable filters then show ONLY the choices pertaining to remaining, filtered data? thanks, l. excel 2007.

Hide Zero Values in a pivottable

don't know if you HAVE to do it programmatically, but if not, there is a check-box in the options (or maybe 'veiw', or 'advanced', etc, depending on the version) that gives you an option to show or not to show zeros on a worksheet, including pivot tables.. l

    vlookup on list

my vba is very limited, but i know how to do it with formulas, if that helps. it's a bit bulky. basic idea would be, somewhere to the right or on another sheet or on the sheet where you have the master table of Cal Pro Carbs values, to - look for comas using FIND, e.g. FIND(",",$A1)...

Minor Change Caused Major Increase in Calculation and Saving Time

it's WORD WRAP ! darn word wrap slows everything to a halt! what an utter nuisance.. i would have never guessed... but - it's not that simple - looks like it does it only in conjunction with automatic row height. still under investigation.. in the meantime - BEWARE of WORD WRAP ! l
