Hi all,

For example u have a string tat spans the width of 1.5 Cell, (e.g. cell A & B). In some circumstances, the string will be chopped off at the length of cell A, tat means, certain words are hidden behind cell B.

However, at other instances, the entire 1.5 length of the string can be seen provided cell B is empty.. My qn is "Is there anyway i can dictate the form of display tat i desire? I would like the entire string to be displayed." Initially i tot tat by setting the cell format to general, it will work the way i wan, but no, tats not the solution..:(

Hi, fulltime,

either drag the colum by holding the right borderline with the left mouse button pressed to the desired width, double click the border of that cell at the top line where the columns are indicated (cell pointer changes from an arrow to a different pointer which points into 2 directions) or mark the column and goto Format / Column and choose either Width (you must enter a value there - the value indicated is the width of the column at that time) or Autofit Selection.

A personal word: perhaps make a thread a bit more readable to all those users not really good in guessing what you mean (I have had some difficulties doing so) by spending some fulltime on complete words instead of abbreviations. Anybody could have answered if they only understood what you mean. Or the other way round - why do you exclude users for possible help? ;)

Ciao,
Holger

thanks Holger,

I think you mis-interpreted my qn. What i meant was, i wanted the string to span beyond the 1st column without having to adjust the width of the 1st column. At times, i seen tat on my spreadsheet, but at times, the string is hidden mehind the 2nd cell.

You could try "Center Across Selection" in the Alignment tab of the Format Cells menu.

Hi, fulltime,

sorry about the misunderstanding. There is no way to my knowledge as the cell value gets shortened if there is anything (value or formula) inslde the next cell to the right. And the option Shrink To Fit will display the contents in no really readble height... The only way I know is by using textboxes or autoshapes.

Ciao,
Holger

The reason why the contents of a cell seem to be "chopped off" is because there is an entry (even a space) in the cell to it's right.
You answered your own question in a way when you said
...certain words are hidden behind cell B
That is exactly what is happening.

The only time that Excel allows text (it only applies to text entries) to appear to span columns is if the cell(s) next to it are null (empty). There is no way around it by setting the cell format.

You can set things like "Centre accross cells", "Shrink to fit" or "Wrap text", but neither will allow the text to be displayed outside the cell boundary.

Rod D,

A space indeed causes my words in cell A to be hidden behind a seemingly empty cell B..

Thank u for enlightening me.. i managed to solve my prob
