Hi,

First off, let me thank you all for your patience in advance.
I would REALLY appreciate any help I could get with this problem. Let me lay out the details.

I DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT know the first thing about programming for ms access. I am an absolute novice, no exaggeration at all.

Being adventurous, and trudging through books and wizards and forums like this, I managed to build two small Access 2003 db's for my employer to help us keep track of scheduling clients.

I've split the database, and we placed it on a networked hard-drive with the intent of sharing the db with 5 other co-workers. This shared database works just fine with co-workers running A2003. However, two co-workers have A2007. When I try to share the DB with them (setting up the front-end, linking the tables, etc), it allows them to open it (at least seeing the first record). After that it won't let them navigate, let alone edit or add anything to the db. There is a message at the bottom stating too bad, so sad, it's in read-only mode

Converting the db to A2007 is not a possibility, since some of us must still interact with the db through 2003. We made the db "trusted" through the security settings...that only got us as far as being able to view the forms (which it previously wouldn't let us).

Searching the internet and forums like this has resulted in either no indication of problems like this, or people who would never even try 2003 on 2007.

I'm stuck! I've spent a lot of time on this db, no doubt because I don't know what I'm doing, but I'm really proud of what I was able to build, and I think I'll keel over if we can't get this to work. Does anyone out there have any ideas or suggestions? Thanks so much!!!!!

Okay, here's the good and bad news -

You really need to give each user a copy of the frontend on their machine so that you don't run into each other with different versions. This should be done regardless of using different versions, but especially in this case.

Hi there!

oh, sorry I didn't clarify. I do (or to the best of my knowledge I have been, anyway) give people their own front-ends.

i'm still stuck! :(

Does each person have Read/Write/Delete rights on the network drive where the backend is located?

Well, not sure why you would have a problem with Access 2007 folk using an Access 2003 format frontend as I've done that with no problems. If they have their own frontend on their computer, then it really shouldn't be giving a problem based on version. You could try converting one of the frontends on the Access 2007 machine to 2007, but you really shouldn't need to.

And, if you have already set the backend location as a trusted location (remembering to check the box to allow a trusted location on a network) then I'm not sure what to say. You did set the backend to be a trusted location as well as the frontend location, correct?

hmm, that's a good question, I'm not sure! I won't be able to get back to it until tomorrow afternoon, but I'll see if I can confirm that both front and back ends are set to "trusted"

if that doesn't work,
I'll also try converting that particular front end to A2007, but do you think it will have any problems entering data through a 2007 format to be stored in a 2003 back-end?

Are all of the PC's running the same version of Windows. I have heard of some problems with sharing when some PC's on the network are Win XP and others are Vista.

Pat

I seem to have had the same problem as well. I was testing a DB yesterday. Could open it on 2 XP machines, but only one Vista machine at a time from what it seemed. Have you guys heard of a rhyme or reason on this?

DB was created in 2007, converted down to 2002-2003 format.

I think it is a Vista issue. As with many Microsoft products, Vista does not play well with earlier versions. Search for a hot-fix. If your company is large enough, use their incident support system to get MS to fix the problem for you.

Hello, all!

Thank you so much for your help, it seems the network drive security settings needed tweaking (why only one person's security level was alterered, I have no idea). it's crazy how the smallest thing can have such a frustrating domino effect!

thank you all for your advice, i appreciate it

I had a similar problem when I upgraded to Vista on an older machine. I couldnt open with my 2007 version. I had to call microsoft and they signed in and did a fix... on a machine built iwith vista its been find. they did a data fix of some kind on my server machine... took an hour on phone and had to pay for the tech support.. but saved me a lot of time in the lon run!
