Hi Gang

I am seeking assistance. I am wanting to link my database to a serial device. I have spent weeks researching and am thoroughly confused. This is what I understand at this point;

Keyboard Wedge Software allows serial devices to communicate with Access not unlike pressing keys on a keyboard.

2. There is a 'thing' called MSComm.ocx. I have tried to work out what this is to no avail!

3. There is a similar sounding 'thing' called NetComm.ocx. Apparently it is a 'wrapper' for MSComm.ocx. So I now have a wrapper (what ever that may be) for MSComm.ocx whatever that may be.

4. ActiveX. This is extremely hard to pin down. From what I can work out, it is a fancy button that is a front for a small program.

I am new to Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). I believe that VBA is very similar to Visual Basic 6 (VB6).

I was wondering if anyone could help me with this. Keep in mind I deliver bananas for a living (and I'm not joking :)).

Kind Regards

Jason

Hi Nigel

Thank you for your reply. I have purchased Dick Griers book from Amazon and have also seen this website. Unfortunately, both a little over my head. I am beginning to wonder whether if Access is capable of dealing with serial ports. I may have to consider learning Visual Basic? Be interested in your thoughts.

Kind Regards

Jason

Hi

I can't see why it wouldn't work in Access. The language between access and visual basic is similar if not the same in most cases. The bigger question would be, are you using it in the correct way? It's hard for someone here to even contemplate offering help or solutions when we don't know what you are trying to do.

What is the purpose for the serial port connection? Are you trying to control something, get data or pass it? Are drivers required.

Have you made a plan of what you need to do and the requirements that surround it?

Cheers

Nigel
