is it possible to send the results of a query in access 2002 to excel and for excel to create a chart from the data automatically instead of just creating a data table in excel and my having to manually create the chart

Howdy. Yes, it is possible. There are two ways to approach it.

1. Use VBA for a complete, end-to-end solution. This is not a simple task, but certainly doable.

2. Work with another worksheet in Excel that pulls the data from the imported data (also in Excel). Then give that a dynamic named range(s). Then build a setup worksheet that can give you what you want (i.e. rolling 13 week or 13 month, or...). Once that is done, determine a trigger for choosing the end time of the data, which affects all other cells in the Setup worksheet. Then build the charts on this setup worksheet, but place the charts on its own worksheet. Complicated to explain, but works really well. And once done, it requires only one cell to be changed for the entire workbook to give you the results you need.

Bottom line: either method will require some up-front work. Each has advantages. I have used both. For me I might choose 1, but I have developed solutions using 2, because once people understand they can trouble-shoot and maintain. And they don't have to use VBA.

Can you post a small sample of what you would like for the finished solution?

I want the results of the query to be a bar chart or possible a pie chart

The query returns this sort of results.

Shift ID | Shift Type | Summary of Shift
---------------------------------------
1 Day Shift 32
2 Night Shift 62
3 Weekend 54
4 Not Known 30
5 Not Applicable 6
