We have a database that we are moving from access office 97 windows 98 to office 2000 on XP. But we keep getting an error trying to open the database that we don't have permission - or not a member of the group - or don't read/write permission and so forth (a list of about 8 things). We have tried added users to the group, changed the ower but that hasn't worked???? Does anyone have experience with this? If so what needs to be done?

I assume that the original db has security on it. Sounds like a *.ldb file (security workgroup) lockup. Post as much detail about the db as far as it's original usage and I'll try to help. Look for a file ending in .ldb in the directory where the db is. Read the file with Notepad. It will tell you who was in the db when it locked up.

I'm not sure if that makes sense. We are physically moving the database off of Office 98 Access 97 and want to open it in Access 2000 that is Office XP. When opening the database we don't get the option to Convert and Open, rather we get the errors I posted previously. Does that make sense? Your suggestion makes me think that it had an issue in my XP environment and failed there. Is that what you meant?

The errors that you report are generally related to a secured db not being exited properly which locks up the associated security workgroup so that no one can open it.

Did you find a file ending in .ldb in the same directory as the db?

When opening a 97 db on 2K you should get the convert message which makes me think that the 97 version is locked.

If you have a pc still with 97 can you open it?
