I have been running Access97 since '97 most of that time on a network. I have just updated to Office 2000 and Access has converted time/cost and company cost databases to 2000 format.

When attempting to open either of these across the network I am getting an error message like "Jet cannot open "file". It is already opened exclusively by another user or you need permission to view its data."

It is not opened by another user. I have checked file permissions which are not read only. I can only assume there is a lock file somewhere but have not found any apart from the .ldb files which are in place only when the 2000 database is really open on the owning machine.

A saved '97 version on the same directory on the same machine opens without problems.

Operating system is 2000XP SP1

Does anyone have any ideas?

Check that your permissions include the ability to create and delete files in the folder where your DB resides. If you cannot create a .LDB file, you cannot open the DB in normal r/w mode.

Don't forget that to create a file, you ALSO need WRITE / MODIFY on the folder in which the file would be created.

You say you are running XP with SP 1

I have XP with SP 2 and have auto updates on. Recently I went to get on the net and found the networking connections on both my PC disabled

Then tried to open a Db on one Pc and the same Db on the other PC as I have been able to do for ever (as you) and got the same error as you mentioned. Then simply tried to open the Db from the other computer and got a read only msg?? Then when opened with the shift key down a bit of the forms would display but not show any data.

As Doc Man says, I think it is an XP permissions issue but I haven't investigated any further.

If the permissions are OK check which service pack you have for Office 2K. I have had this problem and fixed it by installing the latest sp which I think is SP 2.
