I am having problems with Access itself opening slowly. I am just opening Access with no objects in it at all, just the program. It use to open quickly. I made some changes to the pc it is on around the time Access started to act up. I have tried to reverse those changes, uninstall new programs, and it still is slow. I have reinstalled Access, I have made sure there are no connection problems with the default printer and have tried about everything I can think of. I have two other pcs set-up the same way and they are having the same problem too with the same set of circumsatnces. I have even installed Access on a fourth slower pc and Access opens up just as quick as ever.

I have alot of programs on these pcs that use Access to print reports. They run Access from the command line. Access opens prints a report and then closes. It is important that Access opens up quickly.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should try to fix this problem?

Thanks

Warren

Is your database on a network and is it spilt?

Did you compact and repair after changes?
Use the Analyze performance tool.

No, I am talking about the Access program by itself, with no tables in it, no linked tables in it, no forms, no queries, no reports, nothing. I was having this problem on an Access db I use, but when troubleshooting it I tried just opening up Access by itself. So I have eliminated any problems with any specific tables and so on.

ok, then motleyjew brought up a good point, please answer his question. What does that 4th PC have that the other 3 don't. The only thing i can see you have done something differen't to the other 3 that you didn't do to the 4th. If your are on a network try changing your profiles. Its something real small that you are missing.

What version are you using?

Have you tried doing the reinstall/repair option that is contained in the add/remove programs to see if that does the trick?

I have the same problems every about 3 Months...(WIN XP SP3, AC2003)

This really helps....
Ac-Help-Detect and Repair- Restore default Settings = YES

How many ac-crashes do you have in a week ?

The 4th pc is a brand new install of xp with Access 2000 on it. I have tried disconnecting them from the network and I still have the problem. I have gone back and reversed any changes that I have made on the three pcs since before they started acting up.

The sequence of events that I think caused this problem are:

1. The install of a document scanner.
2. The install of the full version of Adobe Acrobat 8

The 3rd thing I did was to change the way a web server ran on these pcs. This web server opens Access via the command line that runs a Access macro that prints a report and then closes Access. This web server runs as a service under the System user that was allowed to interact with the desktop. This set-up worked fine. I had to change this service to run as Administrator due to the install of the scanner. I thought that was what slowed down Access. I uninstalled the scanner and put ther service back to run as System again.

I have undone all of these changes and have tried to put these three pcs back to a state before the problem. I have reinstalled Access and I have uninstalled Acrobat Distiller. I was not able to use System restore. The earliest restore point was after the problem.

I have not tried to do a repair. I will try that today.

I am not familliar with what Access goes thru when it first starts up. Could it be a registry setting, dll issue or printer issue. Also, these three pcs are running XP pro. I try to keep these three pcs identical. I did the same things to them and they all had the same problem.

I know there is a lot going on here and the sure fire way to fix my problem would be to rebuild. This would take quite a bit of time and would be quite disruptive to the business.

Thanks

I have not tried that yet. I will try it today.

See what happens IF don't hookup the scanner. I had a real issue with a scanner. In fact we had to use a laptop just for the scanner to work. Ever time they hook the scanner up to the network, the database ran real slow and had a lot of error messages. Just a thought. Access can do some strange things. Iam sure its something real simple. It just takes some time to find the soultion. Stay on this forum, they have some real Access gurus here.

I have tried the Detect and Repair and this did not help. I have removed the scanner and that did not help.

Any other ideas?

You maybe already done this as well, and I am just fishing now.

On the PC that runs normal (4th PC). Have that same person sign on to the ones that run slow, or even try hooking up the computers that run slow into the same spot where the one that runs normal.

Trying to isolate to the user, maybe. Have you change or reissue the user profile.

Have you reinstall XP or what ever operating system that you have on the 4thPC.

Don't give up, its something real small, and you kick yourself in the butt when you find it.

One last hope try old boblarson on this forum, he is a real sharp guy. I mean there is a lot of them here, but he is the first to pop in my mind.

BINGO, It works fine under a different user than Administrator or System.

Now how am I suppose to fix that?

Access has to be run by the System user. The web server is run as a service under the System user. The web server service is what is running Access. The problem happened when I had to change the way I ran that service from System to Administrator. I originally thought that may be the problem so I changed the service back to System. That did not fix it. It looks like changing this service back and forth some how corrupted the way the Administrator and System user run Access. Now the Administrator also has a problem when it runs Access from the desktop and and via a service.

How do I fix this problem?

Thanks,

Warren

Great, now just reset the user profile. I had a feeling that is what it was. We have that issue all the time.
