Active X Controls Not Working

Hi, Big Jim here:

On any computer with VB6 on it, my active x controls (such as the calendar) work fine. Without VB6, they do not.

I have tried registering the ocx, but nothing seems to work. I was wondering if there was a file that I could download that would allow me to register all of the active x objects provided for in Access without actually installing VB6 (due to licenseing).

Or is there a sure-fire way to get these controls to work that I am missing?

Funny, I had the opposite problem. VB6 broke my calendar control. That fix is in article Q287472 on the MS knowledge base.

Are you sure that the activeX controls were properly installed on the other PCs? Just moving an Access database that uses the controls won't install them. I think as far as the calendar control goes, you need to specifically install it when you install Access.

Hi Pat,

I made the techies come up and re-install Access 97 in front of me. We made sure that all checkboxes and sub-categories were properly checked off. Still, I could not get most of the "More Controls" to function properly, including the Calendar Control and the Progress Bar.

I will take a look at the fix you mentioned tomorrow at work and see what happens.

I took a look, but there is nothing there that will help me. It is disturbing that there are so many controls available in Access97, but none of them work without VB being installed.

There is a difference between being able to use an activeX control in an app and building a new app. Just because you see a control listed when you click the insert ActiveX menu item, doesn't mean that you can add the control to a form in your db. The common dialog control is a good example. It exists on EVERY windows system but unless you have the Access developers edition or some recent version of VB installed, you can't add the control to your Access forms.

I'm not 100% sure of this but I think the only ActiveX control that comes standard with the retail version of Access is the Calendar control.

Your explanation makes sense. I wish there was a way to install the controls without having VB6. Some sort of patch code perhaps.

Instaling the run-time version of VB seems to be enough...

Thanks Alexandre, but my problem revolves around licensing. I would like a good 40 people or so to be able to use the Active X object in multiple locations across the country, but I cannot install VB on all of their computers.

Maybe Active X objects just weren't meant to be for me.

Any specific actx control? There are some replacements which are not actx and actually work better, the cal control in particular.

Nothing in particular really, just trying to figure out what I can use whne I create forms for the user.

I just can't believe there is no way to register all of the Active X components listed under More Controls without installing Visual Basic.

Hey all! Just wanted to let you know that the Package and Deployment Wizard, as noted in the above articles, corrected my problems. I can now create an Active X control, such as the progress bar, and then use the PDW to set up the correct files on someone elses computer. Thanks for everyone's help!
