I have tried puting an active X control into my system32 folder.

I have tried regeristing it by 3 different methods ( including a third party manager that makes it "Fool Proof"!?)
I have tried this with a number of different controls.

It don't seem to mater what I do I can't find them in vb in access and it would be nice to find them because one of them I really want to use.

I know that at least one of them works because it came wiv an example that works in Access but I still can't find the control to use it in my own app.

Call me thick, call me stupid, call me what u like but please someone call me and tell me what I need to do or what I am doing wrong.

In the form design view, the ActiveX control should be available from the Insert -> ActiveX Control menu.

Inactive X !

Thats what I thought but it aint there -------
I've shut down progams, rebooted windows and they still refuse to appear the only way I can find them is in windows explorer and there they are in full glory and reporting that they are registered.

I've even cleaned me glasses their still not there. ????

I've tried to add loads

the first one that threw up a prob was MSCOMM32.OCX since then i've tried lots.

All I get is the ones listed befor I started with one exception and thats XPcalender.ocx that I downloaded as a source and compiled myself in VB6 that one has appeared ok

Thanks

Pete

You are aware that it won't actually be called that in the list of ActiveX Controls?

That will be called Microsoft Common Dialog Control

And it's not one you'd need anyway as the common dialog can be called by using a Windows API command instead.

Have a look at both of my examples on this thread.

Ah ha

How silly of me to expect to be able to recognise it by its name.

Oh well I never was much good at languages!!

Thanks for that I'll go explore i've just had a quick peek at the thread you pionted me at and seen the links to your examples. But I will have to have a proper look tomorrow now as the old dear is bitchen about what time it is so best go and pay her some attention.

But thanks again all and I'll report back when I've had a proper look

Cheers

OK Thanks Mike-O-Phile

I can't get a look at your examples because if I try to open them from the link I get a file corrupted msg and if I download them I get an empty zip???

I have been and had a look at the article on MS help that you pointed me at ---- that states pertinence to Office 97 but I presume that it is still relevant to XP

I still don't understand why some .ocx's appear in the toolbox and others don't but if I read up on CommonDialogBoxes I hope this will become clear.

I thought the CommonDialogBox was used for either passing messages to the end user or retrieving information from the same.

I am new to programming so I am prob. trying to put the cart before the horse but, as they say, "Necessity is the mother of invention" and this is a necessity.

Thanks

No, it's for selecting file names. The Dialog part is the term used for a form that pops up modally (i.e. you can't get rid of it without sme action - think of a message box)

Yep Got that bit now.

I have also managed to download your examples, (Windows jus needed a size 10 up it's reset button --------- again), so I'm off to have a looksee

Thanks again

Big Thanks Guy's
