ActiveX License Required?

Greetings, All

I'd like to try jazzing up a few forms with Activex controls, but with certain controls, specifically microsoft controls with version 5.0. The moment I try to place one on a form, I get a message "You don't have the license required to use this Activex Control" and more blah blahs saying to contact the vendor.

I thought these controls came with Access. I guess it's possible that they got installed somewhere along the way in the last 3 years. Getting to the point;

1. Are these controls such as "Microsoft ProgressBar Control, version 5.0" a part of the standard install with Access 97? If so, how'd I get my license revoked? I overtly registered them, but it didn't make a difference.

2. If they're not a normal part of Access 97, can anyone point me in the right direction as to how to get them licensed? I spent too much time at MS website, but looped around in circles without an answer.

Thanks for the consideration.

To register an ActiveX Contorl, go into any database and follow the steps:
1 - Click on the Main Toolbar "Tools"
2 - Click on ActiveX Controls
3 - Scroll down and highlight the control that you want to register - In the bottom portion of the box, it will show you where the file is located.
4 - Click on Register (another box - file directory will open up. If it does not open up in the right directory, then select it and find the file.
5 - Double-click on the file and you should be set to use it.

This will work with the standard ActiveX Controls that are packaged with either Microsoft and/or Windows products. If you are wanting to use an Add-In ActiveX, from another source, then most times you would have to have a license registration from them.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, registering a control does not seem to correct my problem. I thought perhaps I should unregister, and then re-register a control. Once I unregistered it, it dissappeared from the registration list altogether, so I no longer can even try to register it. The problem does not seem to be registration, but license.

So now I have 2 questions:
1. Does anyone know how to get an unregistered control back into the registration list in the tools/activexControls list of available controls? I unregistered commondialog. The comdlg32.ocx file still sits in my c:/windows/system directory, forlorn and unrecognized, unlicensed and rejected.

2. Does anyone know how to get the license restored? I tried reloading Access97, but there was no change.

OK, I figured out part of it - I fooled around with the registration list thing and realized how dopey I've been. I can get the controls re-registered.

I dug deeper into the MS KnowlegeBase and found a similar problem related to ODE Tools being installed after another application had already installed an earlier version of comdlg32.ocx which said to rename the current comdlg32.ocx and reinstall and rename it again. I tried that reinstalling Access97 - no change.
