I am experiencing some problems with Access 2000 Databases, when a user tries to open up the Database they sometimes get a message saying the Admin File is Locked other times they can login as normal. This has just started happening to a number of our Databases and the only way we can seem to solve the problem and get the users logged in is by rebooting there machine (sometimes needs rebooted twice).

All of the Databases are running off a server using Access 2k Runtime and are delivered to the users via Citrix. As I have said this problem has only just started occuring and with different databases all of the time.

Anyone any ideas??

Thanks

When the "locking" problem occurs, you need someone with Windows Admin rights to examine the .LDB file to see who owns it and what permissions it has.

Ideally, the first person to open a DB creates the .LDB file, so unless they are in an Admin group, the .LDB file is theirs.

In order to use an Access DB in a normal folder, users must have "Modify" rights on the folder AND that folder should allow files created in it to inherit its permissions.

This is where Windows security setup becomes important. Your Windows Admin person might (legitimately) object to adding a bunch of users to a permission set, but if you already have a Windows GROUP defined for your users, you only need to set the permissions once on the folder, using the GROUP mentioned earlier. Then, when it is time to add a new user to the DB, you have to edit the workgroup at the Access level. You must get your administrator to add the new user to the GROUP. BTW, if you defined the Access security by groups, it is as easy in Access as it is in Windows. Just add the user, add the user to the group, you are done.

Thanks for the reply.

I understand what you are saying about the permissions and these have not changed for the last 18 months at least and everything has been working fine since then so I can't see this being the problem.

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks again.
