Hi

I would like some advice or opinions from people who have worked with access and mysql.

Currently we run a large database in access which holds around 3500 records. It is actually running quite slow at the moment. What would you suggest to speed it up? ive heard running it on a sql server but i dont have the info to know if this would be correct.

Also i was thinking or changing the access database and getting it fully redone in mysql why would this be more advantageous?

Also i havent any knowledge on MySql is it easy to learn for a beginner? Do you have any information such as websites i could visit to learn or sample databases? Or would it not be worth me learning it? What would you see at the front end and back end?

Sorry to bombard you with questions

I value your opinions

Thanks

3,500 records is not large for Access, the real problem comes with how many people are using the DB at the same time really.
check out this site for tips on how to speed up Access

MySql is a back end DB really, I have only used it with PHP not Access so cant really say about how well they react.

thanks for the advice

3500 records is chump change to access. We've had posters with 350,000 records and they got reasonable (not great, but reasonable) performance.

Things to look at:

Simultaneous users

Speed of machine that is your shared-file server (and other loads on it)

Speed of the network between your server and the machines sharing it

Size of the data subset implied as the domain of the queries

Speed of the machines that are your workstations

Any and all of the above can do you in. Any two of thoses being less than optimal and your response goes into the tank.
