Assisted suicide. . . . .legal or not?

Why do we need a constitution at all?Isn't the bible enough to tell us all what's right and wrong?The drafters were smart enough to realize that things could change over time so they made it flexible and changeable - unlike the bible which never changes.

Yes, the constitution is changeable but not the way the liberals want to change it. The drafters were also smart enough to realize that groups of people would try to change it without the so-called representation. Kind of like OBamacare, Just push it down our throats Vote it through on Dec. 24th at almost midnight. On the other hand, 'weed' is against the fed statue, a Law set up by representatives from 50 states. I say go through Congress.! You say that will not work because the Republicans won't do anything. Well, How about Dirty Harry, henchman for Obama! There have been 166 bills sent from Congress to the Senate and the Senate has failed to vote or sent even one of these to committee and ......

make guns illegal for civilians who don't need them except to shoot up schools and movie theaters.

Why do most all the shootings happen in areas that are very liberal. (the North. Colorado, etc.) The truth, is the North has some of the harshest guns laws that do not work do they? The biggest problem is the mental health problem of these people that have been ignored by us all. When you take the guns away from the law-abiding citizen, only the thugs will have them.

If you get a chance, watch Revolution (its on Netflix) It will show you what an unarmed civilian population could and would be like.

No need to explain the obvious, unless you are shoring up your own justification for not just rehashing the old thread.

I highly doubt that the rest of the UK are concerned about Oregon in a country thousands of kilometers across the Atlantic. Why are you so over focused on the United States? Is it just fodder for your never ending USA bashing and endless rants. You are not living there, and going by your numerous posts you have no desire to move to that country.
Let it go, this obsession over the USA can not be healthy for your mental state.

I am well aware that this has been discussed before, I am not that senile.

If you take time to read both my starter posts, they are different.

This thread refers to the attitude in the UK, and the fact it was highlighted on TV, plus the fact it is legal in Oregon, the main question being, what are the defining rules in Oregon? Can anyone do it? Is it a good thing (for Oregon)?

It would be better if someone knew the answers to those questions, I'm not interested in what people's personal thoughts are.

Here's another question.

In the USA, is it possible for a state to make a law that is at odds with the main government law?
For example, can a state ban guns when it is legal everywhere else? Or can a state make it legal to assist suicide when everywhere else it is illegal? If so, what is the point in central government making laws if individual states can override it?

I didn't say I had all the answers. We would obviously need to carefully craft the bills. In the end, it doesn't really matter what we do because those determined to do it, will do so, and there won't be anything we can do about it.

I firmly believe that assisted suicide SHOULD be legalised in very strict circumstances. I'm still appalled by how Tony Nicklinson was treated in the UK and there has been a similar case in Ireland recently, although this story does at least report that she died peacefully.

A civilised country should be able to formulate a law to allow for this. The criteria could be very strict and for instance could require a court order. It need not be a quick decision, but if a person convinced a judge that he/she wanted to die and had a good reason, then there could be court-ordered immunity for a doctor or relative who assisted. You could also legislate tightly on methods.

Some countries in the world have death penalties. Whether you agree with this or not (for the record I do not) it is state-mandated death and is not legally a crime. And this is for killing a person who generally doesn't WANT to be killed. We can at least allow those who find it unbearable to carry on the dignity of an easier end.

A good friend of mine has Huntingdon's Disease and is facing a horrific death, probably within five years. His mother went the same way when he was a teenager and he knows what to expect. He's terrified. And he wants help. I know he has been researching how to do it and if he needs help at the end, I'll give it if he asks, and will gladly suffer any consequences.
