Autonumber anomaly?

Everytime I create a new database, I want the first column to be an autonumber field. While I type the data in the very first entry, only the word (autonumber) shows up. This is not a problem. Unfortunately, when I start entering data for the second row in the table, the autonumber for the first entry starts at 22. The second entry is 23, and so on. However, I would like the autonumbering to start at 1 and not at 22.

Shouldn't it "automatically" start at 1?

I suppose in some cosmic sense it doesn't matter. No item ever gets the same number. Nevertheless, I'm bothered by this. Have I failed to do something, or have I done something wrong?

It used to, there are problems with autonumber in newer versions supposedly fixed, but apparently not, this may be one of the bugs, try searching the Knowledge base for Autonumber

Addendum to Autonumbering question

Perhaps I should have mentioned that this is in Office 2000.

Would this qualify as a "newer" version?

When you create a new table do you by any chance use the "Create table by entering data" option or one of the other options.

I 'm may have done this because I resist using the Wizard. I sort of want to do things on my own.

I did research the knowledge base as "Rich' suggested above. I came upon a response from Graham T. He suggested that I search the actual Access Help Files (in the program itself) for the following entry:

Change the starting value of an incrementing AutoNumber field

When I checked this out, the answer seemed do-able. As of yet, I haven't had a chance to try.

Funny. I tried all sorts of searcheds in the Access Help Files but never managed to word it the proper way.
