Autonumber Incorrect

What would cause a autonumber ina table to revert to a used number?

Ie, my customer table is at 1481, and now after that the autonumber has gone from 1481 to 1280.

Since 1280 is allready taken, it doesn't work well.

Could the users of the database cause this somehow?

In the design view of that table, click the field that contains the auto number. Down in the properties at the bottom, is the indexed option set to indexed no duplicates?
