AutoNumber

I have a database that already has 1000's of records. The person who created the database made a record type text instead of AutoNumber. Is there a way to convert this to AutoNumber? Any help or ideas would be great!!

They are all numbers and in order but alot of numbers are not used.

We use a five digit number for a work order number. The first digit represents the year (4xxxx for 2004). When the year is finished we move on to 5xxxx.

How would we treat this case?

Is there a way to make a form enter the next number with out having to use autonumber?

The lady who enters new work orders uses a form to enter them. Her only problem and why we want to possible use autonumber is to help her not have to look any where else to see the next number.
