average calculation in report footer

Is this even possible? I can do running sums of the columns next to this one, but when I try to do an average I just get errors or blanks.

What are you putting in the Control Source row?

The detail section is based on a query that generates calculations based on a table. So I have tons of ore in one column and oz/ton (grade) in the next column. I can do a running sum of the first column within the report footer. But if I do =avg[oz/ton] in the control source for the second column it asks me for the oz/ton when I first run the report rather than averaging the values in that column.

ok, I found my problem. I didn't realize that your name and your control source have to be exactly the same or the function doesn't work. As soon as I changed the name of the field to match the control source from the query then my averages and my sums worked exactly as they're supposed to.
