Hello All!
I am trying to compute average turnaround times for sampling of patients. I have entered date/time in box together, and have found a code that allowed me to compute years, months, days, hours, minutes seconds which has been super helpful. However, the output is in text and I need it in number so that I can run an average query. I tried manipulating the code so that it does not say "minutes" etc as part of the output but its still considered text.

Here is the code that I used:

Public Function Diff2Dates(Interval As String, Date1 As Variant, Date2 As Variant, _
Optional ShowZero As Boolean = False) As Variant

'
'Description: This function calculates the number of years,
' months, days, hours, minutes and seconds between
' two dates, as elapsed time.
'
'Inputs: Interval: Intervals to be displayed (a string)
' Date1: The lower date (see below)
' Date2: The higher date (see below)
' ShowZero: Boolean to select showing zero elements
'
'Outputs: On error: Null
' On no error: Variant containing the number of years,
' months, days, hours, minutes & seconds between
' the two dates, depending on the display interval
' selected.
' If Date1 is greater than Date2, the result will
' be a negative value.
' The function compensates for the lack of any intervals
' not listed. For example, if Interval lists "m", but
' not "y", the function adds the value of the year
' component to the month component.
' If ShowZero is True, and an output element is zero, it
' is displayed. However, if ShowZero is False or
' omitted, no zero-value elements are displayed.
' For example, with ShowZero = False, Interval = "ym",
' elements = 0 & 1 respectively, the output string
' will be "1 month" - not "0 years 1 month".

Hello and Welcome!

Maybe I'm missing something, but why not just use the built-in DateDiff function and calculate your averages that way?

will that work for input that is something like "3/16/08 3:00"?

because I tried this function:

Tap To EV Report: DateDiff(“n”,[Tap Date/Time],[EV Report Date/Time])

And I keep on getting error messages.
Am I missing something?

I am sorry if I seem to be missing something very obvious! I have minimal coding skills! I'm just a research tech trying to whip access into making my life a little easier!

Is the field data type in your underlying table Date or Text?

If it's being stored as Text data, then first of all, I would change it to Date type. I would also change the name of your fields since "/" is a special character (i.e., [Tap Date_Time], [EV Report Date_Time]).

Once you've changed those 2 things, then I'd retry your DateDiff calculation...

HTH,
John
