If you just want to print your own barcodes it is simple.
All you need is a barcode font there is Free 3 of 9 out there on the net or if you want I can attach a zip with it in there.
All you have to do is wrap the recordsource for your field with the *
It will look like this ="*"&[yourfield]&"*"
then set the font of this filed to the barcode font.

Also, I am not too clear on how it is used. Presumably the numeric code I want to assign as a barcode is simply printed in 'barcode' font and that is it? Is it really that simple?
Presumably all bar code scanning hardware recognises these universal barcode fonts?
With the font I can generate a barcode for my system labels, but from this I will need suggestions for the hardware and suitable APIs that can be added easily in to my database. With this I can scan stock items and Access will 'recognise' the item scanned. Do you have any other suggestions please?

Can you give me some more info on this. I've developed an app for our mail room to track package deliveries. They enter package info into Access, sync with a Palm, then deliver the package capturing a signature and date/time info. then resync to store the delivery info and signature in Access. They are asking for the ability to scan in the carrier ID numbers rather then type them.
Are you using Palms with scanners (i.e. from Symbol) or just regular Palms.

We are using symbol palms the spt1550 they are kinda bottom line but I work for the government so what do expect.
They use satelite forms for the handheld app and we are able to scan the user of the app.
What are you using for the handheld app?

Do you know the approximate cost of the Symbol units. When I looked at this originally, the cheapest units where about $1100. And that just didn't make sense for our purpose. Most probably I will get low end scanners to use for the workstation since I need to capture the package ID when they are entering the package info into Access.
I'm using SmartListToGo (DataViz) on the handheld. Its the only one I found that can capture the signature to a bitmap and then sync with a bitmap field in Access. Even then I had a problem that has delayed implementation. On some PCs the image file wouldn't sync. On others (same hardware/software) it worked perfectly.

I just took a look at Satellite Forms. I was aware of them, but it isn't free. Its licensed to the Developer ($795). But the developer can make as many apps as they want. I already had a license for SmartListToGo. Plus it was a lot cheaper. I'd have to deploy more than a dozen hand helds to make Sat forms cost effective.

-Mailroom clerk enters received date/time, sender, recipient, carrier, packageID in Access
-PDA is synced and new packages downloaded to PDA
-Mailroom clerk takes package and PDA on rounds, delivers pkgs, marks date/time and obtains signature
-PDA is synced and delivery info is updated
-Clerk runs process module which moves delivered packages from incoming table to delivered table.
The key here is that the package IDs are lengthy alpha numeric strings, so they would rather scan them then type them. Currently that process is not in the app so we are open as to what scanner we get.
