I need to print barcodes on my reports. I have just come to find out that our ERP system can only read the barcodes if they are preceded by a Z. I've tried to accomplish this, but the barcodes are not being read correctly. This is the code for my barcode before (when it worked correctly) and after adding the z.
Let's say an example part number is 911150EZ

Before adding the z, it worked fine. The barcode was read as: 911150EZ

="*" & [Forms]![frmRcv]![Combo4] & "*"

After adding the z, it reads the barcode incorrectly. The barcode is now read as: +Z911150EZ

="*" & "z" & [Forms]![frmRcv]![Combo4] & "*"

Where is that "+" sign comming from? I need to get rid of that. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thank you.

Try...

="*z" & [Forms]![frmRcv]![Combo4] & "*"

And if that doesn't work try converting the combo value into a string...

="*z" & str([Forms]![frmRcv]![Combo4]) & "*"

HTH

Thanks for the help. I'll try those suggestions.

still looks the same

this option resulted in the same thing being read by the scanner. It is still putting a + sign in front of everything.

="*z" & [Forms]![frmRcv]![Combo4] & "*"

With this option the scanner will not even read the barcode.

="*z" & str([Forms]![frmRcv]![Combo4]) & "*"

Any other ideas?

can you add a field to your query

I don't know if this helps, but...

Maybe something is going wrong w/ the combobox value?
I added a Barcode field to the query that my report is based on.

Barcode:"*z" & [ProductNumberField] & "*"

I added that as a Barcode field to my report.
Hope that works.

Not sure if I understand you. Are you saying that you added a field to your query called Barcode, and in the Criteria, you added

"*z" & [ProductNumberField] & "*"

Then you just reference the Barcode field on the report?

Almost...
Using query builder on the report's RecordSource...
add a field that should look just like:

Barcode:"*z" & [ProductNumberField] & "*"

But replace ProductNumberFiled w/ your field name.
"Barcode" can be replaced w/ anything.
It's basically a calculated field called "Barcode" using the ProductNumberField w/ "*z" preceding and "*" ending it.
Therefore you could drop the Barcode field directly on your report and it should be set.

Just a thought, have you tried using a capitol "Z" instead of the lowercase one? Could be your barcode font is misinterpretting the lowercase letter. HTH!

EDIT: Just checked my own barcode-printing DB, has the same thing, but with other letters (Q, L, etc.) I used a font called "39251", no idea where I got it from, though.

I'm not sure where you're creating the full barcode, but I do mine directly on the report, ie, inserted a blank textbox, and made the datasource = "*Q" & [fieldname] & "*" . Worked perfectly for me, anyway.

Thanks guys,

I'll give those ideas a shot, and let you know what happens.

Casey and Jonathan,

Thanks for the help both of you. It was just that the Z needed to be capitalized and in quotes after the *. How sad that I spent so much time on this.

This is the working end result:

="*Z" & [Forms]![frmRcv]![identity_column] & "*"

Thanks!
