Thank you to everyone who helped me on this thread. Your help has been 'invaluable' (not just valuable) to me. 
The code works as I want it to. Whether or not it is the best idea for me to use, is still up for grabs. But we will see. Thank you all the same.
And the questions raised from this have also been awesome in getting me to think more like a programmer... (Which I am not)
