Question Cell referencing

Guys, I'm having problems with cell referencing. Each time a reference a cell for example =R[-6] in EXCEL, it initially returns the correct reference and once i try it again it only returns the formula. Anyone experienced this please reply.

You're referencing a cell incorrectly. A cell cannot be referenced in such format i.e. =R[-6]. A cell is referenced like =R6
