Changing Data Type from Custom to Number

I'm running into a problem that I've tried to solve two different ways without any luck: The table was imported from Excel, where the format was a custom (#,##0.0"EA"). I'm now in need of converting this to number type in Access to perform calculations on it, but have been unable to as changing the type deletes the data. I also tried (unsuccessfully) to "strip" the alpha characters. Any thoughts?

Add a new field to your table and then convert the field into the new field with a query. I believe the Val() function will pull the correct value up to the alpha characters.
