Changing defaults on modal transparent background

I need to figure out how this holds a changed selection value. When the database is open, and I make a change, it sticks. But when I close and reopen the database, it seems to default back to the original values.

When you make a change in what? All I see in your "Code" is some text. Code cannot have text like that - without quote marks and without an expression.
